Problems with the autoclave: guide to the most common problems (and solutions)

stainless steel autoclave

The autoclave is an essential device for increasing the pressure and flow rate of water compared to that supplied by a network, such as the water distribution network. This tool is indispensable in many industrial and domestic applications, but, being a pressurized device, it can encounter various problems that compromise its operation.

Pressurization problems

One of the most common problems with autoclaves concerns pressurization. If the autoclave does not reach or maintain adequate pressure, with the engine turning on and off frequently, there could be several causes:

  • Leaks in the system (of air or water). Leaks in pipes and fittings can be identified with a visual inspection of joints and seals, which can be resolved by replacing worn seals and repairing or replacing pipes damaged or clogged due to rust and scale.
  • Malfunctioning pressure switch. Pressure switch problems can be of two types: continuous on and off cycles of the pressure switch, which runs idle, or a pressure switch that does not start. In the first case, if the pressure switch does not switch off it could be a sign that the pressure is not sufficient, due to wear, dirt residues or rust and limescale. On the contrary, if the pressure switch does not work, and the water, after an initially normal jet, begins to weaken, the cause could be attributable to a blocked water motor, especially if the system has not been used for a long time.
  • Internal membrane or expansion vessel damaged. This hypothesis must be tested using a pressure gauge, before possibly replacing just the interchangeable diaphragm, eliminating all the pressure from the hydraulic system and removing the external part, or the entire vessel.
  • Defective safety or control valves. In this case, after the inspection the valves must be cleaned, repaired or replaced depending on the extent of the damage.
  • Problems with the pump. Also in this case, after checking the pump for any defects, it is necessary to clean, repair or replace it.

Be careful, however, not only with too low pressures: even too high pressure could, in the long run, cause rapid wear of the hoses or engine problems.

Temperature problems

The temperature of the autoclave must be precise and constant, to guarantee the effectiveness of the processes. Common temperature problems, on the contrary, include

  • Insufficient heating. The cause of a temperature regulation problem could be a malfunctioning thermostat. In any case, this must be checked and, if necessary, replaced.
  • Overheating. It may be due to damaged heating elements, which ultimately need to be repaired or changed.
  • Temperature fluctuations. Improperly functioning temperature sensors can give incorrect readings. In this case it is therefore necessary to check the sensors, calibrate them, and only finally replace them if faulty. Improperly functioning temperature sensors can give incorrect readings. Abnormal noises.

Even the noisiness of the autoclave could be a symptom of something not working.

  • Beats. Knocking noises are often caused by damaged or worn bearings: it will therefore be sufficient to replace them with quality spare parts to guarantee long-lasting and optimal functioning of the autoclave.
  • Hissing or bubble-like sounds. They are often indicative of cavitation, due to low suction pressure. In this case, you must ensure that the water inlet is free of obstructions, and that the water level in the tank is sufficient.
  • Excessive vibrations. The latter are generally caused by pump misalignment or loose fixings. Correcting the alignment and tightening all the bolts should fix the problem quickly and easily.

These are just some of the most common problems with an autoclave, and some of them require specialized maintenance, carried out by expert technicians who solve the problem quickly, competently and in complete safety.
