DESCRIPTION
The imhoff tank is a cistern that has the function of favoring the sedimentation of the coarse solids present inside the sewage that remain on the bottom of the tank and, through the anaerobic digestion, to break down an aliquot of BOD. It’s composed of two hydraulically communicating compartments, the first of sedimentation and the second of digestion of organic substances. The imhoff tanks are made of plastic and have 2 internal sectors, one called digester, and the other sedimentator. The imhoff tanks are an integral part of a sewage treatment plant from residential homes or industrial activities.
The sewage from the toilets is treated in the imhoff tank by settling the sludge on the bottom. Solid parts are discharged from the upper area which is called digester due to the inclination of the walls. The so-called cold anaerobic digestion takes place at the bottom of the tank. It is preferable to insert, upstream of the imhoff tank, a degreaser for the eventual removal of the oily part coming from the kitchens. The pits are sized assuming 200 liters per inhabitant equivalent and an organic load of Bod5 equal to 60 grams per inhabitant equivalent. For the volume of sedimentation we have instead 40-50 liters/ae and for the digestion 100-120 liters/ae.
Imhoff tanks need one or two purges per year, depending on the use and number of inhabitants (people). Very resistant thanks to their reinforcement ribs. The right choice of the imhoff pit is given by the final delivery: sewerage or sub-irrigation or directly in drainage on tab.4 (directly on the ground).
The choice of graves imhoff is determined by mandatory rules in the particular regions. Usually national transposition rules are followed.
Large imhoff tanks intended for communities of 100 equivalent inhabitants have a horizontal development and are divided into two hydraulically communicating zones. The imhoff pits guarantee a purification of BOD5 equal to or greater than 30%, COD greater than 30% and suspended solids greater than 50%.
Made entirely of high density LDPE polyethylene, they are horizontal or vertical. The inlet and outlet pipes have diameters that change according to the inlet flow of the wastewater to be treated. The imhoff tanks are purged every 6 or 12 months in relation to their use. The top caps are unscrewed and the bottom sludge is removed by a specialized firm. It is essential that the drains are siphoned to avoid unpleasant odors. It is also necessary to connect the biogas discharge outside.

It takes on 200 lt/ae per peak hydraulic load. For example, for a residential dwelling we have that for each inhabitant corresponds to 1 equivalent inhabitant. In the case of imhoff per restaurant the ratio of equivalent inhabitant to actual inhabitant is 1 to 3. So one inhabitant equivalent every 3.
Water can generally be dispersed on the ground if, after imhoff, another container is inserted, called a secondary purifier. The latter allows to reach higher levels of purification that allow to comply with the strict tabular limits required.
